What is landed cost and why does it matter?

Landed cost is the true total cost of importing a product — not just the purchase price, but everything it takes to get the goods to your door: freight, insurance, import duties, customs fees, and any additional tariffs. Many importers miscalculate their margins because they only account for the product price and forget duties can add 5%–145% on top.

For products imported from China in 2025, Section 301 tariffs alone can reach 25%–145% depending on the product category — a reality check that has reshaped global supply chains.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an HS code?

The Harmonized System (HS) code is a standardized international system for classifying traded products. US Customs uses 10-digit HTS codes (a more specific version of the HS code) to determine the correct duty rate for every imported product. The first 6 digits are internationally standardized; the last 4 are US-specific.

What is the Merchandise Processing Fee (MPF)?

The MPF is a CBP fee charged on most formal entries. It’s calculated at 0.3464% of the CIF value, with a minimum of $31.67 and a maximum of $614.35 per entry. It applies to nearly all commercial imports regardless of origin.

What are Section 301 tariffs on Chinese goods?

Section 301 tariffs are additional duties imposed by the US Trade Representative on goods from China, introduced in 2018 and expanded since. Depending on the product category (List 1–4), the additional rate ranges from 7.5% to 145%. These stack on top of the normal MFN duty rate.

Is this calculator a substitute for a customs broker?

No. This tool provides estimates for planning and budgeting purposes. For formal import entries, binding duty calculations, and compliance advice, work with a licensed US customs broker (CHB). Incorrect duty payments can result in CBP penalties and interest.

What is de minimis and does it apply to my shipment?

The de minimis threshold allows goods valued under $800 (per person, per day) to enter the US duty-free and without formal entry. However, as of 2025, goods originating from China and Hong Kong are no longer eligible for de minimis treatment under executive orders — they are subject to full duties regardless of value.
